A: Natural gas, in the healthy state, does not have an odor. When healthy gas is pumped to your neighborhood, an odorant, dubbed mercaptan, is combined to support homeowners in detecting a leak.

The fragrance has been compared to the smell of decaying eggs plus is utterly noticeable.

A “whiff” of gas is signaling ye of a problem.  If ye smell mercaptan (rotten eggs), rught away leave the structure plus call 911. Do not light a fire or spin upon or off any electrical devices. Do not lapse until ye have been told which it is safe.

If ye think a gas trickle outside, possibly by detecting an fragrance of mercaptan or conference a hissing receptive to advice entrance from the ground, leave the area rught away plus call 911. Abandon any apparatus being used in or nearby the area.

If ye have been doing any home mine projects such as planting a tree or structure a fence, it is critical which ye hit Gopher State One. Call 800-252-1166 plus a deputy will symbol all application locations where ye will be working.— Elk River Fire Chief John Cunningham
